An attempted meta-analysis of 11 heterogeneous, moderate-quality randomized trials could demonstrate no benefit of incentive spirometry in preventing postoperative pulmonary complications or mortality, in 1,160 patients undergoing upper abdominal surgery, report Guimaraes et al.
